About CNY-PR AGEP
 
The Central New York-Puerto Rico Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) project is intended to significantly increase the number of domestic students receiving doctoral degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with special emphasis on those population groups underrepresented in these fields (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders). AGEP is particularly directed toward increasing the number of minorities who will enter the professoriate in these disciplines.
 
Program Objectives:
    (1) To develop and implement innovative models for recruiting, mentoring and
    retaining minority students in STEM doctoral programs.
    (2) To develop effective strategies for identifying and supporting underrepresented
    minorities who want to pursue academic careers.
 
CNY-PR AGEP Fellows participate in a supportive graduate school environment, which includes:
  • Opportunities to interact with STEM faculty members frequently in informal settings
  • Per mentoring throughout the graduate school process
  • Workshops to prepare for a career as a professor
  • Experience developing and implementing programs to recruit students for graduate
       programs in STEM
  • Travel grants to present at professional conferences
  • Assistance in searching funding
  • Opportunities to publish
  • Opportunities to encourage and help prepare the next generation of STEM graduates

    Recruitment Activities for STEM undergraduates Provide a pathway from undergraduate to graduate school and to a career in the professoriate:
  • Campus visits to CNY-PR AGEP institutions
  • Workshops to assist students in applying for graduate school
  • STEM recruitment fairs
  • Assistance in securing funding for graduate school
  • Assistance in securing research internships
  • Career guidance workshops
  • Graduate students as mentors for undergraduates
